When Ron LeDuc called Cheryl Wirth moments after meeting her in a New Haven nightspot, the two never knew he’d be on bended knee a few years later on a snowboarding trip to Colorado. The Connecticut couple, who now lives in Newport, was eager to share the Newport County experience with 130 guests at the stunning Channel Bells estate in Jamestown.

“We were going for a shabby-chic, beach-themed wedding and wanted to keep it simple,” the bride shares. “Channel Bells is a stunning property with views of Castle Hill, the marina and the Newport Bridge across the Bay. It’s a very special place!” Well-manicured grounds, with an abundance of multi-colored hydrangeas, roses and tiger lilies in bloom, enhanced the simple elegance of the event. Ron said “I do” in khaki linen pants, a white linen shirt and brown leather flip flops – a motif that Cheryl calls laid back and beachy, much like the groom himself, whose childhood memories of his family’s Charlestown beach house have greatly shaped his persona.

In keeping with the seaside theme, friends and family savored peanut butter and jelly and carrot cake cupcakes, decorated with white chocolate shells, beach balls and anchors. All eyes were on the newlyweds as they cut into a sandcastle-inspired cake topped with the same whimsical “Kissing Fish” that were featured on their wedding invitations. When it came to the coral centerpieces they coveted, the crafty couple improvised with spray-painted branches of a crabapple tree that the groom designed himself to create an authentic look. “He came home with practically a whole tree in the back of his Jeep!” she laughs. “We spent several months chipping bark, priming and painting them this beautiful, shiny coral. People actually wanted to take them home!”

To end the lighthearted celebration on a sweet note, guests left with fish-shaped shortbread cookies reading “Ron and Cheryl are O-Fish-ally Hooked!” The happy couple enjoyed their first months as newlyweds in Newport, and is planning a honeymoon for 2012.
