About to leave the dock for a sunset cruise with friends in Boston, Emily Slater met Khalid Adem, who tried to jump on board. Emily and friends left him dockside until the boat returned, but Khalid of Cambridge, MA, and Emily of Branford, CT, grew close over dinner and dancing that night. Six years later, their thumbprints were stamped in the shape of a heart on a canvas for their wedding guests to sign. -MC

Continuing the Timeline
The Bohlin’s sperry tent, boat dock and sunset view flawlessly tied in pieces of Emily’s childhood trips to Newport and the couple’s first meeting. “It seemed like our relationship was coming full circle,” Emily says.

Everywhere a Sign
After Emily’s mom passed away in 2002, the salty smell and the white caps on the sea comforted and uplifted Emily, connecting her to her mother. Emily’s boss snapped a picture of a small rainbow before the ceremony on a rainless day. Emily saw the picture and was flooded with emotions, truly believing it was a sign from her mom.

Favorite Memory
Emily and Khalid’s photographer persuaded the owners of a yacht to let them capture some breathtaking shots onboard – this is now a memory that hangs in the newlyweds’ home. This was a romantic start to a wedding weekend that continued in Boston. The couple wore gold detailed capes and had a henna party at their traditional Ethiopian wedding (a Melse). Because of a major flood, many of Khalid’s family members in Texas, where he lived as a child after moving from Ethiopia, couldn’t attend his Newport wedding, but luckily made it to Boston.

Where are they now?
Emily and Khalid’s honeymoon was postponed because of Hurricane Irma, so they planned an anniversary trip to Bermuda. Living in Malden, MA, Emily works as a nanny and preschool teacher, and Khalid is a real estate agent.
