Professionally they were a great team: Xitlalic Savary and Gary Engel worked together for two years. After a particularly grueling day, the colleagues decided to head to Foxwoods for a “there, there” drink. “We discovered our shared love of music and burritos,” remembers Xitlalic. “Yeah, the intricacies of burritos, like bean to rice ratios.”
Five years later the inseparable couple married. As the sun set, Gary popped the question to his love on the Caribbean island of Anguilla. Xitlalic wrote her reply inside a heart drawn in the sand on an isolated, sun-kissed beach.

A casual visit to Newport cemented the place where they wanted to marry in the couple’s minds. “Not only do we love Newport with its lively scene, beautiful homes and dramatic coastline, but its location is between New York and Boston – perfect for our family and guests,” notes Xitlalic. “We wanted them to experience the best of Newport. The Chanler allowed us to showcase them all.” With little more than 30 in attendance, the intimate event took place on the Chanler’s perfectly manicured lawn overlooking Easton’s Beach, and spread to its stylish outdoor terrace where the evening’s reception was dressed with white florals and accented in votive candlelight. The bride, in an ivory ball gown, and the groom, in classic Armani, stepped out and danced to Van Morrison’s “Tupelo Honey,” a song with special meaning for them both. “There were so many moments that stuck with me,” says Xitlalic, remembering the day. “One in particular was when one of my bridesmaids had everyone in tears with her memories of spending time with us as a couple, seeing how we embraced after he’d come home from a business trip. That night she told Gary that I was the woman he would marry.”

From Newport, the newlyweds took off for France, Spain and Italy. In France, they visited Xitlalic’s grandmother’s farm in Montferrier for another festive ceremony for those family members who couldn’t make the very sleek, very classic Newport affair.
