“We absolutely loved seeing people from various parts of our lives celebrate and have a good time together.”

Julia Smith and Peter Liberati on November 14, 2015

It was a whirlwind excursion for Julia Smith and Peter Liberati after their first date in San Diego, where they met taking fitness classes together. “Our first year dating was spent getting to know each other in amazing places: Costa Rica, Saint Martin, New Orleans [Julia’s hometown], and Rhode Island [where Peter grew up in Jamestown].” A befitting engagement began about a year later during an intimate weekend trip to Portland, Maine. “We spent the day walking around the city, eating local seafood and checking out a few local shops. Knowing I wanted him to pop the question in an intimate setting, he chose to propose in the hotel room before we went out to dinner. It was just us two.” Eager to celebrate their special day with their families, a Newport wedding was destined for the couple after Julia was swept away, once again, by his coastal neighborhood while visiting his family in Jamestown. Having relatives who’ve never been to New England, she knew her “Big Easy” family would be just as delighted to join her and Peter for their sumptuous autumn ceremony at the culturally rich Newport Art Museum.—DS

Special Gifts:
The bridesmaids were pampered with luxurious silk pajamas to wear for hair and makeup along with crystal earrings for the wedding day. The outdoorsy groomsmen appreciated their hatchets from Hardcore Hammers presented in wooden boxes handmade by the groom.
Bridal Gown:
The bride redesigned her mother’s 1980s Italian-lace wedding dress from a high collared A-line with layers of ruffles to an open-back sheath, with ruffles reattached to the bottom for length.
Autumnal Senses:
To complement the fall season and the historic Museum, a plum and dark red color scheme with rich floral centerpieces filled the room, while breezes of cinnamon, pine cones and cranberries scented the air.
First Dance:
“With Peter working in the yachting industry and constantly traveling, we felt Bobby Darin’s ‘Beyond the Sea’ summed up our first two years together.”
Where Are They Now:
After absorbing the exotic Brazilian coastline in Rio de Janeiro and Buzios, the newlyweds call East Greenwich, RI home, where Julia is a clinical supervisor at the J. Arthur Trudeau Memorial Center and Peter is an executive chef aboard a private yacht.
