Lauren says, “We wanted a place that was romantic and simple, but would still be special and fancy enough for a wedding. Newport Vineyards really is the best of both worlds.”

After several spirited semesters together at the University of Miami, Luke Logan asked Lauren Schmalzbach on their first date in the fall of 2007. These two Hurricane fans continued their exuberant journey in Miami after graduation until Luke returned to graduate school to study oceanography at the University of Rhode Island, and Lauren transferred to Boston. The two finally settled in Newport when Luke accepted a position at Lockheed Martin in the spring of 2013. During a reunion back to UMIAMI, Luke finally popped the question where it all began. Lauren says, “Surrounded by the same friends, Luke officially asked me to be his best friend forever.” Lauren’s response, “It’s a about damn time!” The two wanted to share their home in Newport with their guests and decided for a romantic, understated wedding at the nearby Newport Vineyards in Middletown.—DS

Special Gifts
Along with monogrammed seersucker shorts and white shirts, Lauren gave her UMIAMI alumnae bridesmaids gold bracelets engraved with the University’s coordinates, 25.7216° N, 80.2793°W.

DIY
The couple found three antique dresser drawers and asked guests to leave notes for their first 1st, 10th, and 25th anniversaries. After the wedding, they enclosed the drawers with the notes and a bottle of wine to open on each anniversary.

First Dance
Lauren and Luke have traveled across the country to see their favorite indie-country acoustic artist, Corey Smith. They danced to Smith’s first traditional love song, “Love Says it All.”

Where Are They Now
After a honeymoon in Antigua, Lauren works as an accounting supervisor at CBIZ Tofias and Luke is a systems engineer at Lockheed Martin.
