A common love of music, abandoned spaces and photography ignited the spark between Nicole Gesmondi and Paul Lavallee, both Rhode Island natives. After Paul proposed in the Guggenheim Museum in New York City, the two decided to host their nuptials at the stately Glen Manor House, located on the banks of the Sakonnet River in Portsmouth, only a few miles from downtown Newport. Inspired by the Petit Trainon at Versailles, Nicole says it is “the ideal place to get married,” and the couple invited 135 of their friends and family for a black tie wedding.

Nicole, of Nicole Gesmondi Photographer, and Paul, a weekday computer programmer and a photographer for Nicole on the weekends, photographed a friend’s wedding at the Glen Manor and “immediately fell in love with the architecture and the grounds.” Having experienced their fair share of weddings, the pair took advantage of their industry connections, which was both helpful and problematic. “Helpful because we work with so many amazing vendors each week we had a real head start compared to most couples, but it was also a problem because we could only choose one vendor even though we enjoy the work of so many!” Nicole shined in a Maggie Sottero fit and flare satin gown with asymmetrical ruching and embellishments throughout the bodice, with a scalloped lace jacket that created an elegant ensemble.

The bridesmaids were dressed in strapless royal blue gowns, which popped against the predominantly silver and gray setting. Vibrant and lush arrangements of blue, white and gray hydrangeas, lisianthus, delphinium, blue thistle and dusty miller made the pastoral Manor come alive. A customized four-tiered masterpiece of chocolate cake with raspberry filling was adorned with blue and white fondant that tasted “like the marshmallows in Lucky Charms.” “When you hire the best, you get the best!”

Thanks to the help of their wedding planner the wedding went perfectly. Nicole and Paul’s shared love of alternative rock influenced their song selection for their first dance, settling on Adele’s cover of The Cure’s classic “Lovesong.” Paul’s daughters, Celine and Amber, served as flower girl and best person respectively, making the nuptials a family affair. In lieu of wedding favors, the newlyweds made a donation in honor of Nicole’s father Frank to the American Cancer Society. Finally, after getting to be the bride rather than simply photographing the bride, Nicole and her groom jetted off on a 12-night tour of Italy, stopping in Venice, Florence, Rome, and Sorrento.
