Melissa Epstein and Robert Weller are a match made in the world of online dating. On their first date in February 2012, Melissa excused herself from dinner to text her mom and sister. “I told them that I was on a date with the man I was going to marry.”
Melissa had her heart’s desire fulfilled a little more than a year later. Robert secretly set up 150 candles, a rose petal path, chilled champagne and music. When Melissa came home, she saw Robert on bended knee holding a ring box. Robert “saw her bags drop to the floor as quickly as her jaw before she screamed ‘yes.’”
The Newport Beach Club at Carnegie Abbey in Portsmouth, where Melissa’s parents have a second home, was an easy choice for the couple. “One look at the site and we knew we wanted our wedding there—the water, sunset, Mt. Hope Bridge and lighthouse are all close to our hearts,” explains Robert.
The couple perfected their rustic romantic theme with help from their wedding planner, including a classic white Newport Tent festooned with shades of blush, pale gray and ecru, including a lounge area complete with couches and cocktail tables. Melissa further personalized the space by displaying her wedding invitation, among several smooth stones hand-picked off the nearby beach.
During the ceremony, officiated by Melissa’s uncle, the couple put a twist on tradition by having Melissa’s two nieces as flower girls along with the two family dogs as the ring bearers. After dining at aged white farm tables with 200 guests, the couple served their favorite Missouri butter cake dessert in lieu of a wedding cake.
Melissa offers her sage advice to other brides: “Keep everything in perspective. Your guests will enjoy themselves simply by the fact that a couple they care about is dedicating their lives to each other.”
The newlyweds sailed the coast of Turkey and several Greek islands with family and friends before settling down to wedded bliss in Boston.
