Melissa DiFiore was late for a very important date. Her engagement, to be exact. While running behind at work the day before New Year’s Eve, she met her boyfriend, Adam Salter, at their home before heading to Maine to ring in 2010. “The one thing Adam asked me that day was please don’t be late. Be packed and ready to go so we can beat the traffic,” Melissa laughs. “Well, I wasn’t. I threw some clothes in a bag, and rather than us running out the door, he gave me a hug, asked about my day and got down on one knee.” Her parents were waiting at a nearby restaurant with a reservation for 45 minutes prior, so the betrothed did rush out the door to announce the news, but they left their travel bags, and travel plans, behind.

The casual couple wanted an informal affair with 60 of their closest family members and friends, and decided to marry in Newport just six months after the proposal. “We wanted to spend time with our guests and celebrate with each of them, we wanted something on the water, and it was important that our ceremony and reception site somehow represent Adam and me,” says Melissa. “We wanted a place with character, charm and a little off the beaten path. Eisenhower House provided all three.”

The day was exactly the intimate occasion they had dreamed of. The beachy resort vibe was evident in all the details, from the bridesmaids’ sundresses and groomsmen’s khaki pants and blue blazers, to the simple pineapple centerpieces and the bouquets of white roses and calla lilies. Welcome bags of things to do while visiting Newport greeted guests when they checked in for the weekend, and the newlyweds even sacrificed wedding gifts for themselves in lieu of a more extravagant Italian honeymoon.

While nibbling at the seafood and pasta stations, and on the chocolate and vanilla cake with white buttercream frosting, Melissa and Adam relished every moment of their waterfront affair.

After a two-week tour of Italy, the couple returned to their Boston apartment where the proposal occurred.
